What does the iPhone Compromised Passwords warning mean?

📱 Wondering what the Compromise Password iPhone notification is all about? It states: “Some of your passwords have appeared in a data leak, putting those accounts at high risk of compromise. iPhone can help you resecure your accounts.

🔑 If you use Keychain to store your passwords, and auto-fill them when you visit websites, it will check data breach lists for passwords that match yours.

🚨 When this notification pops up, it means that the password you use for those accounts has been involved in a data breach. This could make it easier for a cyber criminal to access your accounts and private information.

🕸 A website or app might have been breached with the usernames and passwords made available on the dark web. The dark web is a hidden part of the internet, where activity is kept private and anonymous, which is handy for criminals looking to sell data and exploits.

🍏 It might be that someone else used the same password as you, and it has appeared on this list of passwords, so Apple Keychain is telling you to change it. Hackers can run automated attacks using password lists to try to access different accounts within seconds.

💣 Go to ‘Settings’ > ‘Passwords’ > ‘Security Recommendations’ to see if you have any passwords on the list.

❗️ It’s important you don’t use the same password across different sites.

🦠 Common passwords like “Password1”, “Qwerty123”, “123456”, “test123”, “iloveyou”, “letmein”, “football”, “abc123” should not be used.

👩🏼‍💻 Keeping track of all your passwords can be stressful and overwhelming. But, it is much worse if your account is hacked. Use a password manager to generate (and remember) all your different passwords.

If you’d like support setting up a password manager for your accounts, take a look at how we can help you – Protect Your Passwords. If you’d rather do it yourself, there are lots of password managers out there, we recommend 1Password.
