How to hide your Facebook profile

How do I hide my Facebook profile from my employer?

We recently helped someone worried their employer might be able to see their Facebook profile. Although their Facebook profile was private, some old posts and photos that had been posted years ago were still public.

It’s not just an employer you might be concerned about. New clients or potential business partners might also conduct a bit of Facebook stalking before or after reaching out to you. So it’s a good idea to check your social media profiles to see what they might find so that you can decide whether you want them to see it or not. This includes Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, etc.

What is the Facebook View As Feature?

The handy little ‘view as’ feature on Facebook lets you see what is publicly available to people on Facebook who aren’t your friends.

How to see what is available to people on Facebook who aren’t your friends

🕵🏼‍♀️ Here are the steps to follow:

  1. Go to your Facebook profile page,
  2. Select the button with three dots,
  3. Select View as,
  4. If you find things that shouldn’t be publicly visible, exit the view as screen, find that post on your profile and change the privacy settings.

👀 If you want to change who can see all your past posts so that they’re not publicly visible, go to Settings, Audience & Visibility and select Posts. From there, select ‘Limit who can see past posts on your timeline’, then click the ‘Limit Past Posts’ button.

🙅🏼‍♀️ Why don’t you check your friends list and remove the people you don’t want scrolling through your holiday photos and old status updates?

Stop your profile from showing in search engine results outside of Facebook:

  1. Go to your Facebook settings page,
  2. Scroll to Audience and Visibility,
  3. Select How people can find and contact you,
  4. Select Do you want search engines outside Facebook to link to your profile?
  5. Switch this off.

Note: your profile can still be found by Facebook users searching for your name.
